Brave 1v1 Be brave

1v1 Crossways set-up, from the Irish FA Grassroots Resource Booklet

Set up

  • Set out 2 goals facing the groups and a red cone in front of each.
  • Two groups, a ball each.

2 nets, a ball per player, bibs and cones. Two groups start at opposite sides.

How to play

  • The first player from one group dribbles toward the red cone and shoots into the net facing them.
  • As soon as they shoot, the first player from the other group dribbles towards their cone and shoots.
  • After shooting, the player joins the opposite group. Each child counts their own goals.

Keeping everyone moving

Groups of 3 at most, two setups if numbers are bigger. Each child counts their own goals, no team score.

Make it easier

Make it harder

  • After a player dribbles and shoots they stand on the red cone as a passive defender.
  • After shooting they stand at the back of the box and defend inside it.
  • Remove the box: the two groups play 1v1, the next player going as soon as the opposite player shoots.
  • If the defender wins the ball they can score in their net.

Three things to say

  • Change of speed when attacking.
  • 1v1 skills to unbalance the defender and create space for the shot.
  • 1v1 defending.

Colts habit

Be brave: shoot early.

Both feet

Shoot with the practice foot every other go.

Heads up

Look at the goal before the cone.

The Colts change: Groups of 3 at most, two setups if numbers are bigger. Each child counts their own goals, no team score.

Safety: Keep the area clear of bags and bottles. Stay on your feet, no slide tackles. No heading.

Keeping score: Each child keeps their own count and tries to beat it next time. Nothing is compared between children.
