Brave 1v1 Be brave

Attack Either End set-up, from the Irish FA Grassroots Resource Booklet

Set up

  • Mark a grid of about 20 by 35 with a goal at each end and yellow cones in the centre.
  • A defender in each half. Attackers start between the yellow cones.

Balls, bibs, cones and nets. Grid about 20 by 35. Two teams.

How to play

  • The coach serves to an attacker, who attacks either end.
  • After the attack, the attacker swaps with the defender at that end, and the defender joins the attacking line.
  • If both defenders are from the same team, attackers choose which side to attack.

Keeping everyone moving

At Colts everyone swaps in and out on a rota whatever happens, so nobody keeps the ball by beating others.

Make it easier

Make it harder

  • A time limit on attacks.
  • Multiple attackers (2v1), or two attackers with a ball each attacking at the same time.

Three things to say

  • First touch, attack at speed.
  • Feints to create space, shooting.
  • Defending: body shape, close down, slow down.

Colts habit

Be brave: attack at full speed every go.

Both feet

Attack the end that puts the ball on your practice foot.

Heads up

Pick your end before the serve.

The Colts change: At Colts everyone swaps in and out on a rota whatever happens, so nobody keeps the ball by beating others.

Safety: Keep the area clear of bags and bottles. Stay on your feet, no slide tackles. No heading.

Keeping score: Each child keeps their own count and tries to beat it next time. Nothing is compared between children.
