Brave 1v1 Be brave

Attacking Manoeuvres set-up, from the Irish FA Grassroots Resource Booklet

Set up

  • Set out 4 gates, 2 either side of each group, with the groups 15 m apart.
  • One group are defenders, the other attackers.

Players divided into 2 groups, 4 gates, 2 either side of each group. Players line up 15 m from each other.

How to play

  • The attackers try to get through the defenders' gates without getting tagged. They get a point every time they get through.
  • After each go roles are reversed.
  • Play against different opposition.

Keeping everyone moving

Run three or four lanes at once with pairs, and swap roles every go, so nobody stands in a line.

Make it easier

Make it harder

  • Add a ball for both teams: a player from each team dribbles towards the other to a central point, completes a 1v1 skill and drives through the opposite gate.
  • A ball with the attackers only: get past the defender without losing the ball, dribbling through either of the 2 gates.
  • Add nets instead of gates and finish with a shot.

Three things to say

  • Speed and change of speed.
  • Change of direction.
  • Unbalancing the defender.

Colts habit

Be brave: try a move every go.

Both feet

Go through the gate with the practice foot.

Heads up

Watch the defender's hips.

The Colts change: Run three or four lanes at once with pairs, and swap roles every go, so nobody stands in a line.

Safety: Keep the area clear of bags and bottles. Stay on your feet, no slide tackles. No heading.

Keeping score: Each child keeps their own count and tries to beat it next time. Nothing is compared between children.
