Pass, Receive, Heads Up Lift each other

Maestro set-up, from the Irish FA Grassroots Resource Booklet

Set up

  • Mark a grid of about 20 by 20 with a small box in the middle.
  • Two teams.

Balls, bibs, cones and nets. Grid about 20 by 20 with a middle box. Two teams.

How to play

  • Both teams try to keep possession of the ball.
  • The team in possession earns a point for 5 passes or for dribbling through the middle box (3 minutes).
  • The other team tries to win the ball back.

Make it easier

Make it harder

  • One of the possession players drops into the box to receive the ball and pass out for a point (3 minutes).
  • Choose: dribble, 5 passes or drop in to receive (3 minutes).
  • Take the box out, add goals, and see if players apply the coaching point to go to goal (6 minutes).

Three things to say

  • Make the pitch big to create space to get on the ball.
  • Dribbling: keep the ball close and protect it.
  • Passing and receiving: type and weight of pass, open body.

Colts habit

Lift each other: move so the passer always has two options.

Both feet

One of the five passes with the practice foot.

Heads up

Look for the box and the free player.

Safety: Keep the area clear of bags and bottles. Stay on your feet, no slide tackles. No heading.

Keeping score: Each child keeps their own count and tries to beat it next time. Nothing is compared between children.
