Practice 13 min 6 to 16 players Cage Half pitch 2016 to 2019

Pass, Receive, Heads Up Lift each other

Move in 2's set-up, from the Irish FA Grassroots Resource Booklet

Set up

  • Mark a 20 by 20 grid with a cone for each pair.
  • In pairs, one player stands at the cone and the other moves 5 to 10 m back.

Balls, bibs and cones. Players paired up with a ball between them in a 20 by 20 grid.

How to play

  • Players pass the ball to each other, practising passing and receiving technique.
  • One player stays at the cone. The other receives a pass from their partner, passes back, then goes to another player and repeats. After 1 to 2 minutes rotate roles.

Make it easier

Make it harder

  • The mover receives a pass, keeps the ball, dribbles to another player at a cone, passes, gets the ball back and repeats.
  • The player on the cone passes to their partner, they play a 1-2 and swap roles. The player on the ball dribbles to another cone player and repeats.

Three things to say

  • Passing and receiving technique.
  • Communication, head up and observation.
  • Movement and angles to receive the ball.

Colts habit

Lift each other: a soft pass your partner can use.

Both feet

Pass back with the practice foot.

Heads up

Look for a free cone before you move.

Safety: Keep the area clear of bags and bottles. Stay on your feet, no slide tackles. No heading.

Keeping score: Each child keeps their own count and tries to beat it next time. Nothing is compared between children.
