Win It, Keep It, Score Work hard

Transitions set-up, from the Irish FA Grassroots Resource Booklet

Set up

  • Mark a grid of about 20 by 30 with a goal.
  • Two teams wait at the sides, ready to come on in numbers.

Balls, bibs, cones and nets. Grid about 20 by 30. Two teams.

How to play

  • The coach serves the first ball to one team and they play 1v1 against one opponent.
  • When the attack ends, the coach serves to the next player and they play 2v1. An extra opponent comes in for 2v2, then another attacker for 3v2, then 3v3.
  • Roles reverse so the other team gets the overload.

Keeping everyone moving

Keep the waiting players busy with a ball each at the side, and run two grids.

Make it easier

Make it harder

  • Continue playing until a goal is scored or the ball goes wide.
  • The team that scores gets the extra player.
  • With the overload, it must be a first-touch finish.

Three things to say

  • First touch, attack at speed.
  • Feints to create space, movement, shooting.
  • Defending: body shape, close down, slow down.

Colts habit

Work hard: defend at once when the numbers change.

Both feet

Finish with the practice foot when you have the overload.

Heads up

Count who is on before you attack.

The Colts change: Keep the waiting players busy with a ball each at the side, and run two grids.

Safety: Keep the area clear of bags and bottles. Stay on your feet, no slide tackles. No heading.

Keeping score: Each child keeps their own count and tries to beat it next time. Nothing is compared between children.
