A chair is the defender. Your child moves until they can see your eyes past it, then gets the pass.

Your child steps out from behind the chair until they can see your eyes, then calls for the pass.

Set up

  • Put a chair between you and your child. It is the defender.
  • You have the ball, about four big steps from the chair.
  • Your child starts right behind the chair, hidden from you.

Garden, park, or indoors with a soft ball.

How to play

  • Your child moves to the side until they can see your eyes past the chair.
  • Then they call Now! and show a hand.
  • Pass to them. They stop it and pass it back.
  • They go back behind the chair and pop out the other side next time.
  • The rule to remember: if you can see my eyes, I can pass to you.

Make it easier

  • Use a smaller defender, like a bucket, so it is easier to see past.
  • Stand closer, three big steps from the chair.

Make it harder, step by step

  1. Move to a new spot after every pass, so your child has to find a new angle.
  2. New spot every pass, and add a second chair, so there are two defenders to get away from.

Three things to say

  • If you can see the passer's eyes, the pass can reach you.
  • Move sideways, not further back.
  • Call and show a hand when you are ready.

Words that work: "I can see you!", "Great angle!", "Lovely call!"

Colts habit

Be brave: pop out and ask for the ball.

Both feet

Pop out left and stop it with your left foot, pop out right and use your right.

Heads up

Look for the passer's eyes before you call.
