Training plan: 2017s, Off the Ball
12 players · 2 coaches · cage · two groups of 6
0 to 10 3v3 as they arrive
- As they arrive: 1v1, then 2v2, then 3v3, on two small pitches with a goal at each end.
- A spare ball in from the side when one goes out. No throw-ins: dribble it in or pass it in.
10 to 25 Station 1, Find the Space
- A 20 m grid of sixteen 5 m squares (nine squares for 9 or fewer). Half the players are passers with a ball, the rest are receivers.
- Passers dribble anywhere with their heads up. Receivers keep moving to find a square with nobody else in it.
- Receivers call and show a hand. Pass only to a receiver who is alone in a square.
- After the pass, swap jobs: the passer looks for an empty square and the receiver dribbles. Play 60 seconds, rest, go again.
- Progress 1: The receiver's first touch must take the ball into a different square.
- Progress 2: First touch into a new square, and two defenders try to cut out passes.
For the 2017s: Add two defenders who try to cut out passes.

25 to 40 Station 2, Next Door
- A 10 m square with a disc on each corner. Three players on three corners, one with the ball. A fourth player stands in the middle in a bib.
- Pass along a side to the player on the next corner, never across the middle.
- When the ball moves, the player now across from it runs to the empty corner, next door to the ball.
- The middle player walks and blocks. If they touch the ball or it leaves, restart with a spare. Swap the middle player each minute.
- Progress 1: The middle player can run and try to win the ball.
- Progress 2: Two touches only: one to control, one to pass.
For the 2017s: 10 m squares, and the middle player may run and win the ball.

40 to 60 Match, 6v6
- Two or three touches every time: at least two, no more than three.
- Theme rule: a goal counts double if the pass before it went to a teammate who was running into space.
- Rules to call on if you need them: everyone over halfway to score, the keeper rolls it out, ball below head height.
