0 to 10 min 3v3
Set up two small pitches with a goal at each end. As children arrive they go straight in: 1v1, then 2v2, then 3v3. Coaches feed a spare ball in from the side the moment one goes out. No throw-ins or corners: dribble it in or pass it in, to keep it fast. The match is the warm-up.
10 to 40 min Station 1 and Station 2, 15 minutes each
Two groups of about 6. Group 1 starts on Station 1, group 2 on Station 2. Swap at 25 minutes. A coach at each station.
Station 1
Slow the Train
Friendly 1v1 defending: stay side-on, back off patiently and slow the train down.
Set up
- Cone out lanes side by side.
- Put discs along the edges every 3 m.
- The attacker (train) is at one end.
- The defender starts 3 m in front, facing them.
Stage 1: play it
- The train dribbles for the far end line.
- The defender stays on their feet, side-on, and backs off slowly.
- The defender scores 1 if the train stops, turns back or goes out of the side.
- They score 2 for a poke that wins and stops the ball.
- Swap and come back the other way.
- After 2 minutes, Move One.
Stage 2: progress it
A narrower lane.
Stage 3: progress it
The train may speed up after the second station.
If it's not working: The train walks.
Keeping everyone moving: Every pair runs at once and turns straight round. There is no queue.
Three things to say
- Side-on with small steps.
- Patience, no diving in.
- Poke only when the ball is too far from the attacker.
You need: ball (1 per pair), discs every 3 m (stations) (about 10 per lane), cones (4 per lane)
Station 2
Dictating Play
Friendly 1v1 defending: steer the attacker wide and away from goal.

Set up
- Mark a 25 by 25 grid with a goal.
- Half attackers, half defenders. Several grids so pairs play at once.
Stage 1: play it
- The defender passes the ball into the attacker, who tries to score.
- The defender aims to dictate play, steering the attacker away from goal into a wide area to narrow the angle for a shot.
- If a goal is scored, the ball goes out or the defender wins it, the turn is over. Swap roles.
Stage 2: progress it
Give players a set number of goes before rotating roles.
Stage 3: progress it
Open the grid up and change to a 2v2 scoring into both nets.
Stage 4: progress it
Add a dribble line: if defenders win the ball they must dribble past it to swap roles.
Three things to say
- Bend your run to put your body between the ball and the goal.
- Close down quickly, slow down, don't dive in.
- Steer the attacker away from goal.
You need: balls, bibs, cones, goal

40 to 60 min Match
A match
One big pitch, 6v6 with goalkeepers. Kick-ins or dribble-ins instead of throw-ins, to keep the touches up. A spare ball comes in the moment one goes out. One coach refs, the other feeds spare balls from the side.
Equipment for the whole session
- ball (1 per pair)
- discs every 3 m (stations) (about 10 per lane)
- cones (4 per lane)
- balls
- bibs
- goal
Habit of the week: Lift each other
Say it at the start, watch for it all session, name one moment on the walk off.
Reminders
- Drinks when moving. The huddle is the walk off: one moment of the habit, with the child's name.
- A ball at every foot. Nobody stands without one for 30 seconds.
- No queues and nobody is ever out.
- Talk under 30 seconds. Show it, don't tell it.
- Every game has stages: start at stage 1 and move on when it is working.
